At Last

Anyone who stepped foot outside yesterday was lucky enough to feel fall slowly making its way to Lake Norman. I walked out of my house to run around 7:30 and was pleasantly surprised at the chill I felt in the air. I almost traded my tank for a T-shirt. When's the last time that happened?

Don't get me wrong, summer at Lake Norman is wonderful, but last week's humidity sent me over the edge. Every time I went outside I returned with beads of sweat on my face and wet splotches on my shirt. Even my 2.5-year-old twins had had enough. When asked if they wanted to go outside to play in the afternoons, they immediately replied, "No, mom. It's too hot." To me that's a sign that we're ready for the seasons to change.

As the day progressed it got warmer, but it still managed to be perfect. After dinner we went on a pontoon cruise — wearing sweaters believe it or not. My husband stopped the boat in the middle of the lake so we could enjoy the sunset. And for a few minutes, we all sat still and watched the sun gracefully drop into pink pockets of clouds. The Tots waved goodbye, as they promised they'd see the sun in the morning. Immediately I was taken back to that Lifesaver's commercial where the father watches the sunset with his son, who immediately asks when the sun disappears if his dad can do that again.

Those are the parenting moments you want to hold onto forever. As I watch our twins ride along in the boat, I'm overjoyed that they appreciate the water as much as my husband and I do. We're all so lucky to live in this area, especially this time of year.

The DNC Experience

Regardless of whether you're a Democrat, a Republican or an Independent, you have to admit it's been pretty exciting having the DNC in Charlotte this past week. Although I wasn't able to go downtown, I've watched the convention on television. And I have to admit that it's pretty surreal to think that all of this is taking place about 30 minutes down the road from Lake Norman.

While I've read Facebook posts about celebrity sitings and cool parties, all I've seen in person from the DNC was a tour bus returning to a hotel in Huntersville on Monday evening. Where are you George Clooney?

So, if you've been out and about this week, please let us know some of the exciting things you've seen as result of the DNC being in Charlotte. It's not everyday that we get to show off this beautiful part of North Carolina to the rest of the world.

Here We Go

I love celebrating Labor Day. But no matter how much fun I have during the long weekend, it's always peppered with a twinge of sadness because I know that summer is drawing to a close. Every year I hope that the warm weather will stretch out until at least mid-October, so I can get some more lake time in. For a few weeks, the weather goes along with me, then suddenly the leaves begin falling and cooler weather arrives. Inevitably, my husband winterizes the boat, and we begin dreaming about next summer.

This past weekend I celebrated the holiday at two lakes (Lake Norman and Lake Tillery just east of here). Both delivered the relaxation I needed. What did you do to celebrate Labor Day Weekend? Did you venture to Charlotte to take in the DNC festivities? Did you grill hamburgers with friends? Did you take in Labor Day sales at the mall? Did you hang out at the sand bar? We want to hear how you like to wind down at the end of the summer.

You Found Me!

Thanks so much for visiting our blog! We're so glad you're here.

Although I love summer at Lake Norman, I have to say that I love fall almost just as much. This morning I took our twins to preschool orientation at the Lake Norman YMCA (one of my favorite places). As I looked around at all the moms and dads with their children, I got so excited about fall festivals (in particular the Mooresville Chili Cook-Off in late September and anything at Historic Latta Plantation or Rural Hill), football games, Halloween and more.

That's the thing about living at Lake Norman, there's always something to do no matter how young or how old you are. It's easy to take for granted, so get out there and enjoy what our area has to offer this Labor Day weekend!
